Massive Earthquake Hits Japan, Triggering Tsunami Warnings

At Least Four Dead, Aftershocks Continue

January 2, 2024, at 1:33 PM

A powerful earthquake struck western Japan on Monday, triggering tsunami warnings and evacuation orders. The quake, with a magnitude of 7.5, struck off the coast of Ishikawa Prefecture at around 10:40 AM local time. It triggered tsunami warnings for coastal areas of Ishikawa, Toyama, and Fukui prefectures.

The earthquake caused widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure. Several buildings collapsed, trapping people inside. At least four people have been confirmed dead, and many more are injured. Emergency crews are working to rescue people and assess the damage.

Aftershocks continued to hit the region throughout the day. One aftershock, with a magnitude of 7.6, struck the Noto peninsula at around 4:10 PM local time. The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that more aftershocks are likely in the coming days.

The earthquake and tsunami warnings have caused widespread panic and disruption. Many people have been evacuated from their homes and businesses. Schools and public transportation have been suspended. The government is urging people to stay informed and follow instructions from local authorities.

The earthquake is the strongest to hit Japan since the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. That disaster killed over 18,000 people and caused widespread damage. The Japanese government is taking steps to prevent a similar disaster from happening again.

We will continue to provide updates on the situation as they become available.
